Petit Point is a delicate and highly detailed embroidery technique that translates to "small stitch" in French. It is a traditional European craft that has been particularly popular in Austria, France, and Germany, often seen in antique textiles and decorative arts.

Petit Point embroidery is distinguished by its extremely fine silk or wool thread, stitched onto a mesh canvas using tiny cross-stitches to create intricate, almost painting-like designs. The precision is remarkable, often featuring 300 to 1,000 stitches per square inch, making it significantly more detailed than regular cross-stitch embroidery. Due to this level of intricacy, it requires exceptional skill and an extensive amount of time to complete.

History of Petit Point
Petit Point gained prominence among European aristocracy in the 18th century, especially in Austria and France. One of its most famous admirers was Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi), who was known to wear Petit Point-embroidered accessories.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Petit Point embroidery was widely used in handbags, compact mirrors, jewelry boxes, fans, framed artworks, and jewelry pieces. In the antique jewelry world, Petit Point embroidery was often set in gold frames as brooches or pendants, highly valued for its elegance and craftsmanship.

In recent years, there has been a revival of interest in vintage and antique Petit Point accessories, with hand-embroidered pieces becoming increasingly rare and valuable. While modern machine-made versions exist, authentic hand-stitched Petit Point antiques retain their unique warmth, craftsmanship, and artistic quality, making them treasured collector's items.

Petit Point（プチポワン） は、フランス語で「小さなステッチ」という意味を持つ、繊細で精密な刺繍技法の一つです。特に、ヨーロッパのアンティーク刺繍や工芸品に見られる装飾技法であり、オーストリアやフランス、ドイツなどで伝統的に受け継がれてきました。

プチポワン刺繍は、極細のシルク糸やウール糸を用い、メッシュ状の布（カンヴァス）に1目1目、細かいクロスステッチを施すことで、まるで絵画のようなデザインを作り出す ことが特徴です。そのステッチの細かさは、1平方インチに300〜1,000目以上 になることもあり、通常のクロスステッチよりもはるかに細密です。そのため、完成までに膨大な時間と熟練の技術が必要とされます。

プチポワンの歴史
プチポワンは 18世紀のヨーロッパ、特にオーストリアとフランス で貴族の間で広まりました。オーストリア皇帝フランツ・ヨーゼフの妃、エリザベート（シシィ）もプチポワン刺繍のアクセサリーを愛用していた ことでも知られています。
